Internship Experience
Through the Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty (SHECP), I have been granted the ability to work with Community Solutions. A nonprofit that combats homelessness and poverty through the engagement of communities, Community Solutions utilizes the power of community to challenge poverty.
For the duration of my internship, I will be working in a residential facility that provides low-cost rental housing to vulnerable communities. My responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting residents with the coordination and implementation of peer-led initiatives that are both of interest to them and beneficial to building community; organizing and facilitating resident social events (cookouts, bingo, outings, move screenings, coffee group, etc.); helping generate content for the building's social media accounts; supporting cross-sector collaboration amongst neighborhood, city-wide, and national-level partners working to end homelessness; and pursuing other initiatives at JJKC Residence that are of interest to the intern, in collaboration with residents and staff. I have four personal objectives I hope to achieve throughout this 8-week internship experience: 1. To develop a better understanding of local and community-oriented solutions for preventing poverty and homelessness 2. Apply the following lessons from academia to real-world situations: a. Listen to the interest of the community being entered b. Engage in the development of community-led initiatives and projects c. Implement projects that are meet the immediate needs of the community 3. Actively participate in community-led events, while also developing my own events that develop healthy community relationships 4. Implement a sustainable initiative that will be capable of lasting after my departure from the program
